Surinamese Legislation in English Translation
The increase in cross-border corporate activity and movement
of persons, together with the recent expansion of the
Caribbean Common Market, has made knowledge of various
aspects of Surinamese law extremely important to a growing
number of institutions and individuals not conversant in
Dutch, the official language of Suriname. To meet this
growing demand The Waterfront Press, in collaboration with
the law firm Schurman, is publishing a compendium of English
translations of Surinamese legislation.
This loose-leaf publication is a work in progress and seeks
to translate a number of key legal documents. The
translation, screening and editing will be done by several
translators all of whom have experience in legal
translations. The screening of the translations will be done
by jurists
experienced in this type of work, as well as a number of
other relevant specialists.

The Constitution of
Suriname in English Translation
The 1987 Suriname Constitution, which has been amended and
ratified since the close of military rule and the return of
democratic institutions, has been professionally translated
and published for the first time in English in 1996.
The neatly bound, peach-coloured book does not cut the
expected drab and sober profile of a legal publication. Its
loose-leaf binding design format makes for the easy addition
of amendments and changes to the law in years ahead.
This document
is now available free-of-charge as a PDF document and
incorporates the 1992 amendments. The acting text, however,
still contains references made to repealed articles or
paragraphs. These faulty references could not be excluded as
a translation has to be true to the original. For the sake
of clarity, square brackets were added, where necessary.

About the management:
The publication was the work of The Waterfront Press in

whose principal aims are the removal of language barriers
and the promotion of higher translation standards and
language skills.
The translation was made by Ms. Annette
Tjon Sie Fat and Ms. Monique Pool. Both translators are internationally certified translators and former Surinamese

upholding international standards of excellence, the
finished proofs are submitted and reviewed by native
